Health Technology

TRANSFORMING A UTILITY INTO A PRODUCT — Since 2019, Norbert Health has been innovating at the intersection of computer vision, machine learning, and health technology. One breakthrough technology was a spot check that required no wires, cuffs, or clamps to take a person’s vital signs. A user sits in front of the device for 20 seconds and without touching the device the user will receive their core vital signs measurements (heart rate, oxygen levels, respiratory rate, and blood pressure).

As a leading member of the budding Norbert Product team, I re-designed the Norbert Health Application to align with our renewed company focus on eldercare. While the previous app was a stop-gap measure to display information and trigger sessions, the new app would serve a vital role in Norbert Health’s debut as a product for the elder care space.

A REDESIGN FOR ELDERCARE

WHAT MAKES A WORKFLOW COMPLIMENTARY?

The redesign of the Norbert Health Application aimed to create an app experience that integrates seamlessly into the daily workflows of care providers in skilled nursing facilities. Monitoring vital signs is just one of many healthcare tasks performed daily or weekly, and these required health assessments are extensive, often consuming valuable time that could be used for more personalized care between providers and residents.

Beyond the time spent on measurements and questionnaires, care providers manually enter data into outdated electronic medical records systems. Recognizing this need, I spearheaded the evolution of the Norbert Device into a comprehensive hub for health assessments. This expanded system enables contactless administration of multiple health assessments, including vital signs, with automatic upload capabilities to the facility’s preferred patient monitoring platform.

EXPLORING MORE HUB FEATURES ENABLED BY COMPUTER VISION AND LANGUAGE MODELS

By leveraging the strengths of Norbert Health's technology (powerful insights from data gathered from video and radar data), I identified opportunities to enhance the Norbert Hub as an effective assistant and designed features for situational awareness and conversation.

With ambient intelligence, the device could become more context-aware, allowing it to recognize patients and know when it’s appropriate to engage. To simplify the start of a vital signs scan or other assessments, we could integrate a chatbot that would create a more intuitive, conversational experience for elderly users, minimizing reliance on button pressing.

NORBERT SAYS HELLO WORLD!

My rapid redesign has enabled Norbert Health to launch our product and begin rollouts in facilities with early adopters. As our Norbert team gathers more feedback about our product performance, my next endeavor will be to develop our product analytics strategy.
